Autumn settles over Malith’s Edge, but the changing leaves bring little peace. The war against the Zitan has raged across the frontier, testing the expedition’s strength and the bonds between its Houses. Now, the Queen has dispatched soldiers to reinforce the settlement. Royal banners approach along the roads, bringing fresh blades and the hope that the tide might finally turn.

But troubling rumors travel ahead of them. Hunters and scouts speak of enormous tunnels beneath the land, passages far larger than any burrowing beast should require. No one knows how far they stretch, where they emerge, or what moves through them in the darkness. While the expedition watches the horizon for its enemies, the next assault may come from somewhere far closer.

Yet the Waldfolk will not allow war to claim every moment of the turning season. The Festival of the Fallen returns, and once again, the people of Malith’s Edge are invited to gather at their tables. Beneath autumn branches, food will be shared, music will rise, and cups will be raised to absent friends. For one evening, old grievances may be set aside as those who have endured another year remember what they are fighting to preserve.
